Magee Secondary School

Magee Secondary is well known in Vancouver for its long tradition of excellence in Academics, Athletics and the Arts. It is housed in a bright, modern building, completed in 2000, featuring an atrium design that focuses and enhances the school’s sense of pride and community. Magee’s gyms, library and computer facilities are up to date and fully equipped. Magee’s Arts wing includes the city’s finest school theatre facility, locus of the extensive Performing Arts program as well as many special district and community events.

The Magee Leaders Profile

Beginning in September 2006, the Magee Leaders Program, a new “school within a school”, will offer an enriched curriculum of integrated studies, challenges and unique experiences to a limited number of highly motivated students.

The program is designed to develop leadership skills through:
• Academic achievement
• Creativity
• Critical thinking
• Social responsibility
• Community service
• Artistic and cultural awareness

Commitment, Initiative, Communication.
These are the cornerstones of effective responsible leadership. They are the core of the Magee Leaders Program, and the basis of the programs’ goals:

1. Commitment: to instill an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship, and of the individual’s potential to effect positive change in our society.
2. Initiative: to encourage students to act on their convictions and to exercise sound judgement in doing so.
3. Communication: to develop in each student the most essential leadership tool – the ability to communicate effectively – by building skill, confidence and understanding.

The Magee Leaders Program is designed for students who:
• have at least a B Average
• are highly motivated
• love to be challenged
• are community-minded
• are team players
• are interested in developing leadership skills

Program Structure

During Grades 8 and 9, the Magee Leaders are grouped together for enriched courses in Social Studies, English, Drama and Physical Education. Their learning program will promote leadership through integrated, thematic units.

The Magee Leaders Program will continue through to grade 12.

The program will feature a leadership retreat, thematic field trip and “challenge days” throughout the year. These days will allow students and staff to engage in creative problem solving, team building and leadership activities.

Transportation, special events and other related program cost is $250.*

*Vancouver School Board policy states that no student shall be denied entry to a program for financial reasons.

If this sounds like you, complete the application form, attach a recent photo of yourself to it, attach a photocopy of your Grade 6 final and Grade 7 Term I Report Cards, and return the package to “Magee Leaders Program” at:

Applications must be mailed or hand-delivered to the school by Friday, January 12, 2007.

Next, plan to attend the group interview session on Friday, February 23, 2007. There will be opportunities to interact with other grade 7 applicants and get to know the teacher involved in the Magee Leaders Program.

In preparation for the interview session, please research a leader who interests you. Be prepared to share this information during your interview.
